Tennessee Law Enforcement Accreditation
|
The Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies, Inc., (CALEA®) was created in 1979 as a credentialing authority to establish a body of professional standards to develop an accreditation process to administer its credentialing program. This accreditation program provides law enforcement agencies an opportunity to voluntarily demonstrate that they meet an established set of professional standards which Require an agency to develop a comprehensive, well thought out, uniform set of written directives. These directives are a means for developing or improving upon an agency's relationship with the community and to Strengthen an agency's accountability, both within the agency and the community. The current 484 law enforcement standards in the 5th Edition Standards Manual state what must be accomplished by the agency, but generally allow wide latitude in determining how to achieve compliance with each applicable standard. The accreditation process is very beneficial to the Police Department, and to the City of Dyersburg. The City receives annually a discount of $100.00 in liability costs per sworn officer from their insurance carrier, the Tennessee Municipal League. Officers have detailed policies and procedures to provide guidelines and requirements in the performance of their duties.
